New Journal subscriptions for 2009

Following on from the results of the 2008 journal survey, the following journal titles will be appearing on the Healthcare Library shelves during 2009. Please have a look at them and let us know what you think.

Where possible, the Healthcare Library also subscribes to the electronic version of journals. The library also activate links within databases like Medline and Cinahl which enable staff to link directly to the full-text of articles.

MD Consult available through Athens

The Healthcare Library now subscribes to MD Consult Core Clinical collections, an online resource providing access to journals, e-books and current awareness services.

MD Consult’s electronic book collection includes core clinical titles and up-to-date editions of key textbooks in oncology, orthopaedics, rheumatology, neurology, dermatology, primary care and emergency medicine.

MD Consult’s online collection of over 50 electronic journals incorporates key titles like Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Pediatrics and Neurology as well as over 20 titles within the North American Clinics series.

Access MD Consult using your Athens username and password.

Journal Survey 2008

The Healthcare Library is conducting its annual journal survey. Please help us to ensure that we subscribe to the journals that you need by completing and returning the form, which can be downloaded here.

Renew and request books online

Library members can renew and reserve books online through the library catalogue.

Follow these easy steps:

1. Contact the Healthcare Library (ext. 6748) to obtain your unique User ID and PIN.
2. Go to the Healthcare Library catalogue : http://selh.sirsi.ltd.uk/uhtbin/qelizabeth
3. Enter your details at the top of the page and click onto Log into e-Library
4. Select Review My Account to view the items you have on loan or Renew Items on Loan to renew items.
5. Logout when you have finished

You will not be able to renew any items that are reserved by someone else or if you have over £3.00 outstanding fines.

Accessing more books

The Healthcare Library provides a shared catalogue with other hospital libraries in the region including Bromley, Lewisham, Queen Mary's Sidcup and SLAM. To search a wider range of books and identify available copies, ensure that you search within the "ALL" section.

Library users can request and order material from other libraries either through obtaining their own USER ID and PIN from the Library Desk or through asking the Librarian to place a request on their behalf.

Medical Masterclass

The Medical Masterclass revision package for the MRCP examinations is now available free of charge from the Healthcare Library.

• Contact the Library to obtain your personal username providing access to mock examination papers and the multi-choice question bank of over 2000 questions.
• Access the 60 patient simulation CD-ROM through the Library computers.
• Borrow the 12 printed modules - short-tem loan (14 days), 2 books at a time.

Information Skills Training Sessions

The following courses are scheduled to run during August and September:

Introducing Search 2.0

Thursday 21st August 2 - 3.30 pm
Tuesday 28th August 12.30 - 2 pm
Friday 5th September 1 - 2.30 pm

Suitable for everyone who has used databases

National Library for Health Search 2.0 provides a unified access point to a range of electronic databases, electronic journals, systematic reviews and images. This course will introduce the new features and improvements while acting as a refresher for individuals who used the old features.

Learn how to:
● Identify which areas of Search 2.0 will meet your information needs
● Set up information news feeds
● Locate electronic and hard copy versions of articles

Research and Study Skills

Tuesday 2nd September 12 - 1.30 pm
Wednesday 17th September 1 - 2.30 pm

This is a course for those new to research or study.

The skills that you learn from this course can be applied to internet search engines, nursing databases, library catalogues and will help you through your studies and work related research. Computers will not be used during this course, but bingo will!

At the end of this course, all participants will be able to;
· Demonstrate the ability to identify several keywords for a concept
· Demonstrate the use of Boolean AND, and OR in order to construct a search strategy
· Identify the strengths and weaknesses of truncation as a search tool

This course is for beginners only, and would be suitable for HCA’s, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals and Non-Clinical Staff who are studying towards a qualification or doing their own professional development research.

Clinical Databases

Some experience of using clinical databases advantageous

This session concentrates on how to make the most of the Clinical Databases that are available through NLH Search 2.0 including Medline, Embase and CINAHL. The session will be hands-on.

● Use advanced searching techniques to maximise results

NLH Search 2.0

Dialog access ended at the end of July and Search 2.0 has taken over.

The following guide will be updated regularly over the coming weeks and provides an introduction on how to make the most of the Search 2.0 capabilities.

Saturday Library closure during August

The Healthcare Library will not be open on Saturdays during the month of August. The Library will be closed on the following dates:

• 2nd August
• 9th August
• 16th August
• 23rd August
• 30th August

The normal Saturday opening hours of 10.00am - 2pm will resume in September.
