Information Skills Training Sessions

The following courses are scheduled to run during August and September:

Introducing Search 2.0

Thursday 21st August 2 - 3.30 pm
Tuesday 28th August 12.30 - 2 pm
Friday 5th September 1 - 2.30 pm

Suitable for everyone who has used databases

National Library for Health Search 2.0 provides a unified access point to a range of electronic databases, electronic journals, systematic reviews and images. This course will introduce the new features and improvements while acting as a refresher for individuals who used the old features.

Learn how to:
● Identify which areas of Search 2.0 will meet your information needs
● Set up information news feeds
● Locate electronic and hard copy versions of articles

Research and Study Skills

Tuesday 2nd September 12 - 1.30 pm
Wednesday 17th September 1 - 2.30 pm

This is a course for those new to research or study.

The skills that you learn from this course can be applied to internet search engines, nursing databases, library catalogues and will help you through your studies and work related research. Computers will not be used during this course, but bingo will!

At the end of this course, all participants will be able to;
· Demonstrate the ability to identify several keywords for a concept
· Demonstrate the use of Boolean AND, and OR in order to construct a search strategy
· Identify the strengths and weaknesses of truncation as a search tool

This course is for beginners only, and would be suitable for HCA’s, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals and Non-Clinical Staff who are studying towards a qualification or doing their own professional development research.

Clinical Databases

Wednesday 10th September 2 - 3.30 pm
Tuesday 23rd September 1.30 - 3pm

Some experience of using clinical databases advantageous

This session concentrates on how to make the most of the Clinical Databases that are available through NLH Search 2.0 including Medline, Embase and CINAHL. The session will be hands-on.

● Make the most of the available databases
● Use advanced searching techniques to maximise results

NHS ATHENS Dialog access ends 31st July

ATHENS access to the Dialog databases will finish on 31st July and be replaced by NLH Search 2.0 . Any saved searches in Dialog will NOT be transferred to Search 2.0 but will need to be copied and re-keyed.

Training sessions for Queen Elizabeth Hospital staff on how to make the most of Search 2.0 will be advertised in the near future. Any staff who have more urgent, or different, training needs should contact Doug Knock Tel. 020 8836 6752.

'Introduction to critical appraisal' training

Thursday 18th and Thursday 25th October 12-1pm

N.B. You must be able to attend on the 18th to also attend on the 25th

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify the key factors of critical appraisal
• Use a checklist to critically appraise articles.
  

This two part course will introduce you to critical appraisal, a valuable research tool. The first session will explain the concepts and terminology involved in critical appraisal, the second session will use a checklist to critically appraise an article.

Suitable for beginners. This course is for Queen Elizabeth and Greenwich PCT staff only.

Cochrane Library Training. Autumn dates.

Monday 12th November 9.30 - 11am

Cochrane reviews bring you the combined results of the world’s best medical research studies, and are recognised as the gold standard in evidence-based health care.

• Decide when to use the Cochrane Library
• Search the Cochrane Library
• Browse by topic
• View, save and print results.

Open to all Queen Elizabeth and Greenwich TPCT staff. Suitable for everyone, no previous experience is needed.

Reference Manager Training. Autumn dates

Friday 28th September 2 - 3.30pm
Friday 19th October 2 - 3.30pm

Reference Manager is designed to automate the creation of bibliographies for journal articles and assignments. It can save you hours of typing references and interpreting requirements for different referencing styles.This course has been developed at an introductory level and is aimed at anyone who would like to learn how to use Reference Manager to store, format and retrieve references from books and journals.

Suitable for everyone, no previous experience is needed.

Learn how to:
● Add references manually
● Import references from Medline, Cochrane Library, etc
● Use Cite While You Write (CWYW)
● Change bibliography style

Open to all Queen Elizabeth and Greenwich TPCT staff.
