Information Skills Training Sessions

The following courses are scheduled to run during August and September:

Introducing Search 2.0

Thursday 21st August 2 - 3.30 pm
Tuesday 28th August 12.30 - 2 pm
Friday 5th September 1 - 2.30 pm

Suitable for everyone who has used databases

National Library for Health Search 2.0 provides a unified access point to a range of electronic databases, electronic journals, systematic reviews and images. This course will introduce the new features and improvements while acting as a refresher for individuals who used the old features.

Learn how to:
● Identify which areas of Search 2.0 will meet your information needs
● Set up information news feeds
● Locate electronic and hard copy versions of articles

Research and Study Skills

Tuesday 2nd September 12 - 1.30 pm
Wednesday 17th September 1 - 2.30 pm

This is a course for those new to research or study.

The skills that you learn from this course can be applied to internet search engines, nursing databases, library catalogues and will help you through your studies and work related research. Computers will not be used during this course, but bingo will!

At the end of this course, all participants will be able to;
· Demonstrate the ability to identify several keywords for a concept
· Demonstrate the use of Boolean AND, and OR in order to construct a search strategy
· Identify the strengths and weaknesses of truncation as a search tool

This course is for beginners only, and would be suitable for HCA’s, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals and Non-Clinical Staff who are studying towards a qualification or doing their own professional development research.

Clinical Databases

Wednesday 10th September 2 - 3.30 pm
Tuesday 23rd September 1.30 - 3pm

Some experience of using clinical databases advantageous

This session concentrates on how to make the most of the Clinical Databases that are available through NLH Search 2.0 including Medline, Embase and CINAHL. The session will be hands-on.

Learn How to:
● Make the most of the available databases
● Use advanced searching techniques to maximise results
